Stewart Cink To Play In BellSouth Classic

DULUTH, GA -- Stewart Cink, former Georgia Tech star and current Atlanta resident, will play in the 2000 BellSouth Classic, March 27-April 2, at TPC at Sugarloaf in Duluth. He will join 143 of the world's top professionals in the race for a first prize check of $504,000. The 72-hole PGA TOUR event, now in its 32nd year, offers a total purse of $2.8 million. Here are some quick facts on Cink:

  • Cink finished second at last year's BellSouth Classic, one stroke behind his former Georgia Tech teammate, David Duval. In 1998, he finished tied for 5th. He already ranks 9th on the all-time BellSouth Classic career money list with $331,020.

  • Cink has taken rapid jumps up the PGA TOUR ladder. Now in his fourth full year, he has increased his earning total in each of his first three years. Last year's earnings of $1,255,100 ranked 32nd.

  • In twenty-seven 1999 starts, he made 21 cuts and collected eight top 10s along with 14 finishes in the top 25. In addition to his 2nd place finish at the BellSouth Classic, he tied for 3rd at the PGA Championship; tied for 4th at the WGC American Express Championship; tied for 6th at the Buick Challenge; tied for 8th at the Canon Greater Hartford Open; tied for 9th at both the WGC Anderson Consulting Match Play and the Reno-Tahoe Open and tied for 10th at the Phoenix Open.

  • In the 1999 PGA TOUR statistical categories, Cink ranked 7th in 3rd round scoring average, 12th in final round scoring average, 13th in sand save percentage and 14th in the all-around ranking.

  • Cink earned PGA TOUR Rookie of the Year honors in 1997 becoming the first golfer to capture that honor the year after being named BUY.COM TOUR Player of the Year.

  • In 1995 and 1996, he competed in 11 PGA TOUR events prior to becoming a TOUR member. He made the cut in 10 of them.

  • He was a three-time All-America at Georgia Tech. In 1995 he captured the Dave Williams, the Haskins and the Jack Nicklaus awards as College Player of the Year.

  • In the 1999 PGA TOUR statistical categories, Cink ranked 7th in 3rd round scoring average, 12th in final round scoring average, 13th in sand save percentage and 14th in the all-around ranking.

  • Cink will enjoy the shortest commute of anyone in the field. Last year, he and wife Lisa completed their new home on a fairway at TPC at Sugarloaf. Prior to that he had lived in Smyrna since graduating from Georgia Tech. Cink is a member of Atlanta's East Lake Golf Club, site of the 1998 and 2000 TOUR Championship.

The BellSouth Classic has been won by some of the greatest names in golf history including Jack Nicklaus, Hale Irwin, Tom Watson, Tom Kite and Tiger Woods. Since 1981, the tournament has contributed more than $8 million to its primary charity, Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.
